Overview
In an era where traditional pedagogical approaches are increasingly challenged by the demands of modern learning environments, educators must rethink their instructional delivery methods to engage and inspire students effectively. This comprehensive two-day course is designed to transform how we approach teaching by integrating ‘old school’ creative methodologies with experiential learning principles. The course recognises that creative thinking is a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) process that involves transforming information and ideas to generate new, innovative solutions for boring classroom instruction. Together, we will understand how creativity has a fundamental place in teaching and learning, moving beyond traditional definitions to embrace dynamic, interactive, and immersive educational experiences. Through some theories and many hands-on practice, we shall explore the intersections of pedagogy and creative expression, understanding how creative teaching can really enhance student engagement, motivation and learning outcomes. Going back to the basics of educating (in other words ‘old school’), we can gain concrete strategies, tools and methodologies to implement in our own classroom contexts.
Objective
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Comprehend the fundamentals of experiential learning and its application in university-level education, understanding how students learn best through direct experience and reflection.
2. Develop creative teaching strategies that move beyond traditional lecture instruction to incorporate innovative, student-centred approaches that foster active learning.
3. Design and implement classroom-based experiential activities that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application within the constraints of traditional classroom settings.
4. Master the art of storytelling and narrative techniques as powerful tools for engaging students and making complex concepts more accessible and memorable.
5. Create an authentic teaching identity that incorporates personal creativity while maintaining professional standards and academic rigour.
6. Understand and apply the universals of creativity including writing, drawing, self- expression, and humour to enhance the learning environment.
7. Develop skills in teaching as performance utilising voice modulation, visual elements, movement, and theatrical techniques to create dynamic learning experiences.
8. Implement “Teka-Teki Time” and other interactive engagement strategies that promote critical thinking and active participation.
9. Design walkabouts and real-world connection activities that help students apply classroom concepts to everyday life situations.
10. Assess the barriers to creativity in educational settings and develop strategies to overcome institutional and personal constraints.
